Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)

Truck classification regulates safety. It is also used for commercial designation and vehicle registration. Check out these helpful flyers to get rollin’!

  • Establish your truck company (Sole Proprietor, LLC, or Inc)
  • Obtain FEIN (aka EIN) from the IRS: $50
  • Apply for authority – MC/DOT/BOC-3: Free + federal fees of $350
  • File UCR (Unified Carrier Registration) Fees based on # of vehicles, 1-2 Trucks: $99
  • Insurance
  • Intrastate Permits (pick up & deliver in the state)
  • NY HUT permit for vehicles 18,000 lbs and above*
  • Trailer registration
  • You may need an ELD: Please refer to the FMCSA for a list of approved providers. (https://csa.fmcsa.dot.gov/ELD/List)
  • Factoring

* NYHUT $105 per 3 years — No Proration

  • 2290 Heavy Road Tax (over 55,000 lbs) based on weight
  • NY HUT, KYU, New Mexico, Oregon permit (KYU is 60,000 lbs and above) NYHUT is over 18,000 lbs.
  • IRP (apportioned/prorated) plates & registration*
  • IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement)
